Consequences of Binge Drinking Among The Teens

Teens are the worst affected by binge drinking.  Over one-third of the students surveyed (37%) reported binge drinking in the past two weeks (defined as four or more drinks in one sitting for females and five or more drinks in one sitting for males). Male students reported statistically higher rates of binge drinking than females, with over two-fifths of the male students (43%) engaging in the behavior compared to one-third (33%) of the female students. There was no significant difference in the rates of binge drinking between students 21 years of age or older and underage students. One out of six of the students who completed the survey (16%) reported binge drinking more than two times in the past two weeks.

Students who drank alcohol within the past six months were asked about negative consequences they have experienced as a result of their drinking. Over one-fourth of the students (26%) reported blacking out (forgetting where they were or what they did) and one in five (20%) had driven a car while under the influence. Sixteen percent of the students missed classes or assignments as a result of their drinking and over one-fourth (27%) reported feeling bad about their drinking. One in seven of the students (14%) reported engaging in risky sexual behavior as a result of their drinking, and one in nine (11%) had experienced unwanted sexual attention.

What Type Of An Alcoholic Are You?

Based on a current UK Department of Health study, there are many reasons as to why  people drink to excess regularly.

They've got identified nine main groups or explanations why people drink heavily. Heavy drinking means 35 units weekly for women and 50 units per week for guys. That is twice the recommended limit.

Although this is obviously only a general guide, where do you think you fit into this? It could be you fit across categories as well as produce other reasons outside the nine presented below. However, it's a useful guide to begin looking on the causes for the heavy drinking.

Depressed drinker Your life is in a state of crisis, e.g. recently bereaved, divorced or in a financial crisis. Alcohol is a comforter and a form of self-medication to help you cope
Destress drinker You have a pressurised job or stressful home-life leading you to have feelings of being out of control and burdened with responsibility. You use alcohol to relax, unwind and calm down and to help with switching between your work and your personal life. Partners often support or reinforce this behaviour by preparing drinks for you.
Re-bonding drinker You use alcohol as the 'shared connector' that unifies your friends and your social circle. You often forget the time and the amount of alcohol you are consuming.
Conformist drinker You use going to the pub or bar as what 'men do' and it is your second home and you have a sense of belonging and acceptance within this environment.
Community drinker You drink in fairly large social friendship groups. You have a sense of community forged through the pub group. Drinking for you provide a sense of safety and security and gives your life meaning and also acts as a social network with your friends.
Boredom drinker This is especially true if you are a single mother or recent divorcee with a restricted social life. Drinking is company, making for an absence of people. Drinking marks the end of the day perhaps following the completion of chores.
Macho drinker You often feel undervalued, disempowered and frustrated in important areas of your life. You have actively cultivated a strong alpha male identity that revolves around your drinking prowess. Your drinking is driven by a constant need to assert your masculinity and status to yourself and others.
Hedonistic drinker You are single, divorced and/or with grown-up children. Drinking excessively is a way for you to visibly express your independence, freedom and 'youthfulness' to yourself. You use alcohol to release your inhibitions.

Shocking Information About Alcohol Abuse

In line with the National Institute on Abusive drinking and Alcoholism, nearly 14 million people inside the United States-1 in most adults over 13 years have abusive drinking or dependence. More men than women are alcohol dependent or have other types of alcohol problems. Rates of alcohol problems are highest among adults ages 18-29 and lowest among adults 65 or older. About 43% of U.S. adults (76 million people) have been exposed to alcoholism in the household; they knew as a kid, married an alcoholic or problem drinker, or were built with a blood relative who was simply an alcoholic or problem drinker.

A Surprising Alcohol Survey Results

I would like to share with you the results of the survey I conducted recently. 171 people from my prospects list responded to give me their issues with alcohol and what their main problems were.

I think this is an eye-opener

First some statistics.

Of the 171 people, 59% are female, 41% male.

38.2% are 45-54 years old which was very surprising to me. In fact 80% of people were over 35 years old.

Here are the full age breakdowns

171 people

18-25 0.6%
26-34 19.4%
35-44 25.3%
45-54 38.2%
55-64 14.1%
65  2.4%

Now what were their main problems with drinking?

There were numerous responses but some of the common ones were:

I can't stop drinking once I have started - I have no limit My drinking hurts me and my family and loved ones Health concerns and it is damaging me physically Do stupid things when drunk which I regret I tend to binge drink when I drink Can't go for a day without drinking

What were the main reason why people were drinking too much?

Of the 154 people who answered the question and they could select multiple answers,

53.9% of people said the main problem they had was boredom
40.3% Low Self-Esteem
33.1% Relationship
31.2% Work
18.2% Family
5.8% Illness
29.9% Other

(Other reasons included stress and to be able to
relax and chill out, grief, formed a habit etc)

So there you have it. Just some of the results
from the survey which  gives a much
better understanding of the people looking for
help with their drinking issues.

A research conducted in the University of Turku, University of Helsinki and National Institute for Health insurance and Welfare in Finland, shows that midlife alcohol consumption and binge drinking  relates to the risk of dementia assessed some 20 years later. The study suggests that both abstainers and subjects consuming huge amounts of alcohol have an  upper chance for cognitive impairment than light drinkers

Journal of Binge Drinking - News & Articles

Alarming statistics on Binge Drinking is now out from a new study.. Alcohol seems to damage more severely the frontal regions of the adolescent brain, crucial for controlling impulses and thinking through consequences of intended actions.

Teenagers
appear to be more responsive to the training and memory problems that may be due to alcohol. They may be more inclined than adults to suffer from lack of judgment and forgetfulness.

Alcohol
includes a powerful influence on the opportunity to form new memories, particularly for facts and events. Short-term or moderate drinking can impair learning and memory far more in youth compared to adults. Adolescents only need drink half around adults to suffer exactly the same unwanted effects
